Gang member sentenced to life after victim dies

Orange County prosecutors say a gang member has been sentenced 29 year to life in prison for shooting a man who died of his injuries 15 years later.

The Orange County district attorney's office says Erwin Sanchez was convicted in May of one felony count of murder with sentencing enhancements for criminal street gang activity and the personal discharge of a firearm.

In 1994 Sanchez, Giovanny Sanchez and Daniel Paul Cruz drove through Santa Ana searching for Scott Sittler, who they believed was interfering in a relationship between Giovanny Sanchez and his girlfriend.

Erwin Sanchez found Sittler and shot him, paralyzing him. The men all pleaded guilty in 1996 and were sentenced to prison.

When Sittler died of pneumonia in 2009 all three men were charged with his murder.
