Gang member sentenced to jail

A 24-year-old gang member will spend three years in state prison for the stabbing and beating of a man near Whole Foods market in Redwood City last year, a judge ruled Friday.

Gabriel Arceo, of Redwood City, was charged with premeditated attempted murder after the March 22 attack and faced life in prison. But prosecutors agreed to drop the charge when Arceo pleaded no contest to felony assault with a deadly weapon in a Dec. 21 plea deal. Arceo also admitted to the special allegations of gang activity and causing great bodily harm.

On Friday, Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said prosecutors were satisfied with the three-year sentence. The attempted murder charge was dropped because of issues with the victim’s credibility, he said.

According to prosecutors, Arceo, his 19-year-old brother, Adrian Arceo, and another man confronted the victim and accused him of being in a rival gang. The victim, also a Redwood City resident, denied being a gang member but the trio reportedly punched and kicked him before Gabriel Arceo stabbed him in the back four times.

Adrian Arceo was sentenced earlier this year to a year in jail and three years of probation.
