Gang allegation divides jury 

A decision about whether a man found guilty last week of murder for a 2008 shooting is a gang member resulted in a hung jury.
Charles “Cheese” Heard was found guilty July 1 of first-degree murder and attempted robbery for the killing of 29-year-old Richard Barrett outside a North Beach nightclub in the early morning of Nov. 25, 2008.

Police said Heard and another man had been trying to rob Barrett of a distinctive jeweled pendant depicting the “Flintstones” character Bamm-Bamm.

A separate trial took place this week on the gang charge, but the jury informed the judge Thursday afternoon that it was split
