Gaming: ‘Sex and the City’ makes a solid game

Popular culture themes from movies and television continue to be successes when translated into slot machines.

The latest is leading slot maker IGT’s Sex and the City machine, which has quickly become one of the most popular slot themes worldwide as the new “Sex and the City 2” movie debuts.

“IGT is constantly looking for new pop- culture brands and evaluating which ones will resonate with casino players,” said IGT representative Jaclyn March. “Games like Sex and the City slots tap into an established fan base and provide players with a new way to experience their favorite show or movie.”

According to IGT, the Sex and the City slot has reached No. 1 among all stand-alone progressive MegaJackpot games on casino floors. The Sex and the City slots are offered in more than 30 Northern California and Nevada casinos. They are not currently made as Class II gaming machines — only for Nevada-style casinos.

The machines are licensed from HBO, which owns the “Sex and the City” franchise.

According to IGT, the Sex and the City machines offer a chance at five progressive jackpots and four bonus games.

Just as the popular Wheel of Fortune game has bonus spins, the Sex and the City game has bonus games, where players can see popular video clips from the TV series. In bonus games, the Mr. Big character cheers players on and congratulates them on their wins.

“It’s clear the Sex and the City slot’s following is strong,” Susan Macke, IGT chief marketing officer, said in a statement. The game is “the perfect accessory to any girls’ night out at the casino.”

Months of planning and design goes into each of these branded games, March explained. IGT worked closely with HBO to bring the most famous moments and attributes of the series to the game.

There’s a revolution coming in slot play. Slot machines are becoming like empty terminals, programmed from a central computer server that will enable the terminal to play any number of games, so the player doesn’t have to search the casino floor for a favorite game or available machine.

New technologies are being perfected that give an all-electronic slot the appearance of having mechanical wheels. IGT has been working on a technology involving layering two or more liquid crystal displays to create the visual effect of depth without the use of 3-D glasses.

“Branded games like Sex and the City slots appeal to a specific type of player looking for a specific type of entertainment,” March said. “The same is true for classic themes such as Double Diamond slots. Both types of games fulfill the needs of different players. The end result is more selection and better experiences for all types of players.”
