Labor leader F.X. Crowley has a slight lead in the race to succeed termed-out Supervisor Sean Elsbernd. After voters’ second- and third-place picks were tabulated under ranked-choice voting, he had less than a 2 percent advantage over Board of Education President Norman Yee, with thousands of last-minute ballots yet to be counted.

The leading candidates included Crowley and Yee, Elsbernd-backed businessman Mike Garcia and former journalist Joel Engardio. The front-running candidates held similar views on many issues, casting themselves as fiscal conservatives and business-friendly in their respective bids to be elected to serve this relatively moderate district, which includes the neighborhoods west of Twin Peaks, the San Francisco State University campus and Laguna Honda Hospital.

Crowley’s endorsements included labor unions. Yee gained the backing of The City’s more left-leaning sector, including progressive supervisors John Avalos and David Campos.
