Funeral planned for slain football star David Henderson

A wake and funeral will be held next week for former San Francisco prep football star David Henderson, who was shot in the head last month in the Bayview district.

Henderson’s mother decided to end her son’s life support at San Francisco General Hospital last week after she was told by doctors he would lack brain activity indefinitely.

Once pegged with a bright future with NFL potential, Henderson struggled to play college ball after graduating from Lincoln High School and had been playing for the semipro Pacifica Islanders with aspirations to return to a college setting.

The 21-year-old was widely considered the best Bay Area high school running back since O.J. Simpson. He rushed for a city-record 5,600 yards in his prep career and led Lincoln to three straight Turkey Bowl titles before graduating in 2008.

Police said last week they are investigating the shooting as a homicide, which occurred May 26 at about noon in the 1400 block of Kirkwood Avenue.

Henderson’s mother, Quenzena, said a wake will be held Monday from 2 to 9 p.m. at Driscoll’s Valencia Street Serra Mortuary, 1465 Valencia St. A funeral will be held Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Our Kids First, 5845 Mission Street.

A fundraiser for the family will be held June 25 during the Northern California Football League conference championship, which Henderson helped the Islanders reach. Kickoff is planned for 2 p.m. at Terra Nova High School, 1450 Terra Nova Blvd., in Pacifica. An online donation tool can be found on the Islanders’ Facebook page,
