French man sentenced in Hayes Valley sex assault

French citizen Slim Manai was sentenced Thursday to two consecutive terms of 35 years to life for sexually assaulting two women, San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris announced today.

Manai was in San Francisco on vacation when he met the two victims in a Hayes Valley bar on March 3, 2006. He was invited to the women's apartment along with some of their friends. At approximately 1:45 a.m., the two women had all the guests leave so they could go to bed.

Manai returned to the apartment a short while later, waking one of the women and telling her he had left his keys and cell phone behind. He then entered the apartment and grabbed the victim from behind.

He held a corkscrew to the woman's neck and threatened to kill her if she didn't do what he said. He ordered her to wake up her roommate, while hitting and slapping the first victim.

Manai then dragged the two women into a bathroom and forced them to undress and orally copulate him. After one of the victims fought back, the defendant fled the apartment and the women called the police.

Manai turned himself into police three days later.

The defendant previously had a sexual assault conviction in Paris in 1999. The victim from that case testified during the four-week jury trial before Superior Court Judge Cynthia Lee.

In February, Manai was convicted of first degree burglary, twocounts of forced oral copulation, sexual battery, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and threats to commit a crime resulting in death or great bodily injury.

The jury also found true allegations of personally using a deadly or dangerous weapon, first degree burglary with the intent to commit a sex offense and using a deadly weapon in commission of sex offenses.

Manai will only become eligible for parole after serving at least 70 years.
