Frantz: Here’s hoping Favre falls flat on his face

For decades, the Dallas Cowboys have staked their claim to the title of “America’s Team.” How they came to such a conclusion, considering the legions of football fans who loathe the silver helmet, its blue star and everything associated with the organization, is incomprehensible — but it is what it is.

Tonight, however, I implore every honest, decent, upstanding NFL fan in the United States to come together behind a NEW America’s Team.

Rise up, Football Nation! Rise up tonight and do what is right! For one night only, we must ALL rise and join our brethren in the Midwest by raiding our refrigerators for every block of swiss, cheddar or even muenster if we can find it ... and surrounding our televisions with it in a gesture of solidarity as we stand in unity behind the Green Bay Packers! On this day, we are all cheeseheads!

You see, even if you have no feelings toward the city that bills itself as “Title Town” one way or the other, you need to join the cause because we just can’t let him get away with it. We can’t let Brat Favre go out there tonight in Minnesota and stick proverbial knives in the backs of his former fans, his former teammates and his former employers before a national television audience. Especially not after he did it to them three times already.

Once a deity in the state of Wisconsin, Brat chose two months ago to sign with the Packers’ sworn enemies, the Vikings, all for the purpose of sending a big “screw you!” to the club that he believes wronged him by having the nerve to demand an answer as to whether or not he wanted to play for them. In doing so, Favre has officially become the most self-centered, back-stabbing player the league has ever seen.

For eight torturous days, we have seen and heard countless stories about the “Revenge Factor” for Favre in tonight’s game. Favre himself claims revenge won’t be on his mind when he faces the Packers, despite his personal belief that the club wronged him by dumping him two seasons ago. I have sat in stunned disbelief watching reporters and analysts breaking down the situation which resulted in Favre’s appearance in a Jets’ uniform last season, and his current status as the geriatric QB of the Vikings.

Revenge factor? For Favre? Are they serious? If anyone should be flying the flag of revenge into tonight’s battle, it’s the Packers!

How it is that so many can forget the circumstances that led to Favre’s dismissal from Green Bay is mystifying. As the story is told now, it’s as if Green Bay GM Ted Thompson came to Favre after the 2007 season and fired him for being unfit for the job, which is a joke.

For three straight offseasons, Favre performed a one-act play in which he publicly debated whether or not he would return for another season, and for three straight years the Packers had to make plans based on the whims of an indecisive egomaniac.

Finally, after another offseason of “maybe yes, maybe no” from Brat, they told him they had to move on.

And it’s Favre that wants revenge?

Whether you’re a Niners fan, a Raiders fan, or yes, even a disgusting Cowboys fan, if you believe in justice for all, tonight you will be a Packers fan. Here’s hoping for four picks of the NFL’s all-time interception leader, and 300 yards and 4 TDs from his replacement, Cal alum Aaron Rodgers.

Revenge, indeed.
