Planning commissioner takes over as restaurant association head 

Gwyneth Borden, member of The City’s influential Planning Commission since 2008, has been appointed as executive director of one of San Francisco’s largest business groups.

Formerly at IBM for a decade working in corporate affairs, Borden started her new job as head of the Golden Gate Restaurant Association Feb. 3. The association works to promote and protect the interests of The City’s broader restaurant industry.

“I love restaurants and food and the important role [they] play,” she said about serving as the industry’s voice in San Francisco. “… Restaurants are literally where [people] … live their lives.”

Several big issues before The City’s policymakers could directly impact the roughly 800-member association.

How San Francisco aims to integrate Healthy San Francisco with the Affordable Care Act and Mayor Ed Lee’s call for raising the minimum wage are two of the areas Borden plans to focus on in coming months, she said.

She also plans to work on issues stemming from a new state law mandating the use of gloves in food service, she said.

Borden’s salary falls within the same range as her previous position: $100,000 a year or more, according to financial disclosure filings.

Rob Black, the previous GGRA head, is now a spokesman for PG&E.
