FORE! Examiner Weekend Golf Guide - July 26

Looks like Gary Player was right when he said he knew for a fact that golfers were taking steroids. At least one is using for sure. Former PGA champion Shaun Micheel was given a synthetic steroid two years ago after he was diagnosed with low testosterone. "I’ve been on it a couple of years, and I suspect I’ll be on it a long time," Micheel said.

GOLF STORYLINES

The nation was behind Mike Weir in 2004, when he looked to become the first Canadian to win the Canadian Open in 20 years. But a collapse down the stretch — he missed a potential winning birdie putt — resulted in a disappointing playoff loss to Vijay Singh in front of a hometown crowd. Weir finished tied for eighth last week in the British Open, moving him into 17th place in the Presidents Cup International team standings. Having won major championships in the past, nothing means more to Weir at this point in his career than winning a tournament in his home country. He’ll try and do that this weekend.

The LPGA is in Europe this week to play in the Evian Masters in France. It’s a tuneup for the Women’s British Open, which will be played at the historic Old Course at St. Andrews for the first time. Michelle Wie, who accepted a sponsor exemption, plans to play in the British, her first tournament since withdrawing from the U.S. Women’s Open last month with a wrist injury. Wie has withdrawn from two of her last three tournaments, managing to complete only seven rounds with an average score of just under 78.

The Senior British Open kicks off today at Muirfield in Gullane, Scotland. It will be the second of three consecutive weeks that Great Britain will be hosting a big golf event. Wayne Grady, who is celebrating his 50th birthday, will make his Champions debut. Grady has five international titles and also won the 1989 Westchester Classic on the PGA Tour. He joins a 2007 Champions Tour rookie class that has won 72 PGA titles, including 15 majors.
