Flu shots coming to SFO

Instead of flipping through magazines during layovers, travelers at San Francisco International Airport can do something more useful — get flu shots.

Beginning Sunday, registered nurses and other licensed medical personnel will administer $35 flu shots for both children and adults at kiosks that will be located in both pre- and post-security check areas, said Martha Kausch of Harmony Pharmacy. The company, which is partnering with immunization services company FLU*Ease, Inc. to provide the vaccinations, has enough supplies to make it through the flu season, which could last until January, Kausch said.

Another site that offers seasonal flu vaccinations is St. Mary’s airport clinic, which is located outside security in the International Terminal. The clinic charges $25 for the shots, which it only provides to adults. The occupational clinic has provided flu shots for years to airline and airport employees, as well as workers at nearby biotech firms, clinic Administrative Director Daniel Ostrow said. However, travelers are also welcome to drop in, she said. Flu vaccines will begin at the clinic Wednesday.

Meanwhile, both airport flu shot providers are working out the details of their H1N1 vaccination supplies. Ostrow said the airport clinic is currently in talks with the San Mateo County Health Department, and will likely offer the shots to groups determined by the Centers for Disease Control to have priority — among them pregnant women, caregivers of young infants and health care workers.

Harmony Pharmacy and FLU*Ease plan to offer the swine flu vaccine as soon as they receive their supplies, Kausch said.

San Francisco musician Dave Earnest, 29, who flew home from Los Angeles on Monday, said the service would probably be well-used.

“It’s the last thing I’d want to do in an airport, but it’s good to have the option there for people. It’s convenient,” he said.
