Fisherman missing in high surf

Two fishermen on the crabbing boat Good Guys out of Half Moon Bay are still missing Wednesday morning as the U.S. Coast Guard will resume their search this morning of the rough waters off the Central Coast.

Friends of the fishermen reported the vessel missing Tuesday afternoon, and the Coast Guard conducted eight air, land and sea searches covering 500 square miles with two helicopters and two 47-foot ships.

The ship went missing off Pillar Point — where the vaunted Maverick’s Surf Contest is held — and Coast Guard crews reportedly found some debris in the water but nothing indicating it was from Good Guys.

Winter storms churning in the Gulf of Alaska are sending heavy and large ocean swells down against the Central Coast with swells Tuesday reaching 25 feet to 30 feet, according to weather services. With the first of two storms having moved through the area the swells today should be smaller, but a second storm is on its way.

The big waves have claimed at least one life when veteran and legendary big wave surfer Peter Davi died surfing Ghost Tree off of Pebble Beach on Tuesday.
