First Street closed due to water main break

A water main break left a gaping hole near the intersection at First and Howard streets, shutting off the water and derailing afternoon commuter traffic headed towards the Bay Bridge. The street collapse — more than 10 feet in length — occurred while work was being done on the underground water pipe.

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission shut down the water in response to the incident, said Tony Winnicker, a spokesperson for utility agency.

Traffic officers were dispatched and southbound traffic -- along 1st street, from Market up to the Bay Bridge onramp – was rerouted, according to Muni spokesperson Maggie Lynch.

"We expect it to impact the PM commute," she said.
