First lady: Hello, Haiti

Barack's not the only one dropping in unannounced!         (afp photo)

First lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden (as second lady of the United States, officially the "SLOTUS") ducked out of Washington for a surprise trip to....Haiti! Take that Oprah, you piker.

The Miami Herald is along for the ride as print pooler for the rest of us. They note the trip was kept secret until the duo landed.

The Obama administration released this statement about the visit:

“First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden are visiting Haiti to underscore to the Haitian people and the Haitian government the enduring U.S. commitment to help Haiti recover and rebuild, especially as we enter the rainy and hurricane seasons, and to thank the women and men across the whole of the U.S. government for their extraordinary efforts in Haiti during the past three months.  They will also reach out to the UN and international relief communities in recognition of the truly global effort underway to help Haiti.”

Michelle-watchers will recall that she cut the administration's PSA on Haiti right after the earthquake, and makes frequent mention of the victims in her public appearances. The temblor hit on Jan. 12.
