First-grader hit by bullet at San Pablo elementary school

A first-grade student was struck by a bullet at Dover Elementary School in San Pablo on Wednesday afternoon and received minor injuries, police said.

Police said that the bullet that struck the 6-year-old girl was fired from an unknown location "some distance" from the school and was descending as it hit the girl’s abdomen.

Officers responded to the school, in the 1800 block of 21st Street, about 12:30 p.m. and found the girl with a gunshot wound to her abdomen. The victim was in the playground area of the school when she was injured.

The girl was transported to Children’s Hospital Oakland, police said.

The incident compelled authorities to lock down the school for about an hour as officers canvassed the neighborhood for witnesses and further evidence.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call the San Pablo Police Department Investigations Division at (510) 215-3150.
