First, and possibly last, police academy of 2010 graduates

The San Francisco Police Department will graduate its first, and only, police academy class in 2010 on Friday at 6 p.m.

Already 37 new recruits have made it through the academy but they now have to face the wringer, training on the streets, where a few young cops have been known to suddenly change their minds about their career choice.

The department’s top cops are counting on many of those recruits sticking around because with a $483 million deficit there doesn’t appear to be a new class on the horizon.

Eleven of the graduates are bilingual, speaking Cantonese, Tagalog, German, Russian, Farsi, Vietnamese and Punjabi. One recruit is fluent in sign language, according to police.
