Firefighters seek help for MDA

Firefighters, metaphorically, have rather large boots to fill. Today, the phrase will have a literal meaning, as members of the South San Francisco Fire Department convene at the intersection of El Camino Real and Spruce Avenue from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s annual Fill the Boot event. Motorists and pedestrians, along with the firefighters, are asked
to drop cash donations into the footwear.

Part of a San Mateo County-wide effort, the drive hopes to raise $6,000 for MDA, which helps children and adults afflicted with more than 43 different types of neuromuscular disease. Some 77 percent of funds help provide free neurological clinics at Bay Area hospitals. MDA also funds support-group sessions and weeklong summer camps for afflicted kids in the Sonoma coastal redwoods. For more information, visit www.mda.org.
