Final chance to hear plans on Geneva Car Barn project

Residents in the Excelsior community will get one final chance this week to hear updates on plans to transform an abandoned train depot on Geneva Avenue into a youth-based community arts center.

The 108-year-old Geneva Car Barn and Powerhouse, once an integral part of The City’s first railway system has been vacant since 1989, but an effort led by city officials and local non-profit groups is set to transform the depot into a thriving cultural center by late 2012 or early 2013.

Over the past several months, officials have been updating the community about the rehabilitation effort, which is part of The City’s Balboa Park Station Area Plan.

This Thursday, city officials will give their final presentation on the project. The community meeting is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Balboa High School.
