Festive times on tap at fair

If you’ve been waiting all year for another ride on the Zipper, your time has at last arrived.

The San Mateo County Fair and Peninsula Festival will kick off June 12 and last through June 20.

Opening up the festival will be the Paramount Laser Spectacular’s tribute to Michael Jackson’s 40-year career. Laser beams and lights will form Jackson’s image with 3-D holographic effects.

Other headliners through the week include classic rock and soul group Tower of Power, Grammy-nominated En Vogue, Latino comedian Paul Rodriguez, rockers Rick Springfield and Eddie Money. On June 14, the fair’s expo hall will host Battle of the Bay, the second annual battle of youth bands.

The fair will also feature traditional contests involving poultry, livestock and other farm animals. But if brew is more your bag than bunnies, then you might check out the Home Brew and Label Contest.

And, of course, for those who are strong of stomach and long on courage, the fair will offer up the scream-invigorating Zillerator Coaster, the wit-blasting Thunderbolt, the foot-dangling Nitro, the mind-plummeting Cliff Hanger, the sweat-inducing Super Shot Drop Tower, the physics-proving Gravitron, the gut-tumbling Energy Storm and, of course, the aforementioned classic Zipper.

While adrenaline-seekers test their tummies and sanity yet again, the more safety-oriented can accompany the younger folk to acts like the Walking Tree Man, the Ham Bone Express and the Kiddy Karaoke.

And in the midst of all this, if you come across an old computer monitor that you have been meaning to get rid of since the Apple II came out, you’re in luck: On June 16 from noon to 8 p.m., the fair will be collecting electronic waste at both entrances.
