Feds target funds used to cover up affair during presidential campaign

WHAT: A federal grand jury is investigating how closely presidential candidate John Edwards may have been involved with campaign contributions used for concealing his extramarital affair and out-of-wedlock child.

HOW: Edwards contributors gave money that kept his mistress, Rielle Hunter, in hiding along with former campaign aide Andrew Young, who initially claimed paternity so Edwards could continue running for president.

WHY: Investigators are looking at whether the cover-up funds should be considered illegal campaign donations, because they arguably aided Edwards’ presidential bid and may not have been reported properly.
