Feds investigating Seattle Police Department in woodcarver’s death

WHAT: Responding to a call by 35 Seattle community groups, the U.S. Justice Department is investigating the Seattle Police Department’s fatal shooting of an American Indian woodcarver who was crossing the street while whittling with a small knife.

HOW: Seattle incidents on video include officers stomping a prone Hispanic man mistakenly thought a robbery suspect, kicking an unresisting black youth in a convenience store and stomping a black man collecting his belongings after being mistakenly released from jail.

WHY: The investigation seeks to determine whether Seattle police have a “pattern or practice” of violating civil rights or discriminatory policing, and if so, what they should do to improve.
