Fatal shooting in Mission is second in two days

A San Francisco man killed in a drive-by shooting in the Mission district Tuesday night marks the fourth homicide in the neighborhood since Aug. 22 and the second in two days.

Mark Guardado, a 45-year-old San Francisco resident, was walking on the corner of 24th Street and Treat Avenue about 10:30 p.m. when a suspect driving a motorcycle pulled up on him and fired multiple shots before fleeing, according to the San Francisco Police Department.

Guardado was transported to San Francisco General Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

No suspects have been arrested yet, and the case is under investigation, police said.

The homicide is the 68th in San Francisco this year.

Guardado died just one block away from where Jorge Hurtado was killed Aug. 25. Hurtado, an 18-year-old student at San Francisco State University, was fatally shot on 23rd Street and Treat Avenue while walking home from a movie.

Just 40 hours before Guardado was killed Tuesday, San Francisco resident Marcelino Canul-Castro, 24, was also shot in the Mission district. Canul-Castro died Monday morning from multiple gunshot wounds after police found him lying on the ground on San Carlos Avenue, about 12 blocks away from the scene of Guardado’s homicide.

On Aug. 22, 47-year-old Samuel Mitchell, a San Francisco native, was shot and killed on 26th and Folsom streets.

The fatal shooting of Guardado wasn’t the only violence during the afterhours from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning in the Mission district.

About five hours after Guardado was shot, another man was stabbed multiple times on South Van Ness and 26th Street, according to police officials. Two suspects fled on foot after the incident, but the victim was able to walk himself to San Francisco General Hospital with injuries that are note life threatening.
