Ex-US diplomat testifies in Argentine baby thefts

A former U.S. diplomat has testified against two former Argentine dictators accused of overseeing a systematic plan to steal the babies of leftist detainees.

Elliot Abrams testified by videoconference from Washington on Thursday in the trial of Jorge Videla, Reynaldo Bignone and other military and police figures in Buenos Aires.

He says U.S. officials at the time were aware of the illegal adoptions and felt that separating babies from their birth families appeared to be a plan by the junta to keep them from growing up communist.

The Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo says his testimony confirms a declassified state department memo and shows why the U.S. should release all of its secret archives on Argentina.
