Ex-treasurer arrested for stealing from nonprofit

A former volunteer treasurer for a Riverside County nonprofit that helps bereaved mothers has been arrested on suspicion of embezzling about $25,000 from the organization.

Temecula police Sgt. Kevin McDonald says officers served a search warrant Thursday at the El Cajon home of 29-year-old Elizabeth Ann Lower.

She is accused of taking money from accounts belonging to Empty Cradle, a Temecula nonprofit association that helps families who have experienced a miscarriage, stillbirth or infant death.

Empty Cradle officials discovered the funds were missing in November.

McDonald tells City News Service Lower first got involved with the organization because she had lost a baby.

She is being held in a Riverside jail in lieu of $35,000 bail.
