Ex-49er David Fiore on bed racing

Ex-San Francisco 49ers player and judge for the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame’s annual Bed Race David Fiore will critique speed and design as teams race their beds through the Marina on April 17. Visit www.jshofnc.org for more information.

What is the objective of the Bed Race? The beds are preconstructed and the participants have to come in and be creative and design their own beds. There will be heats ... where they’ll race and the winner moves on.

What qualifies you to judge the race? I’m not exactly sure anyone is qualified to judge a bed race, but I’ve known the organizers through my years with the 49ers. I played for seven years and started hearing about the things that the Jewish Hall of Fame does and felt like participating.

As a former player, how do you feel about the team potentially moving to Santa Clara? To be honest, I see Santa Clara as an opportunity to have a stadium with a lot of different access and highways. I’m not involved in the decision-making, but from what I understand, it sounds really good and they’re going to have a lot of green components to it.

Will you miss Candlestick? I’ll miss the magic of Candlestick and all the memories I had there. If the move does happen, I hope the team can build the famous winning tradition that they had at Candlestick.
