Everton holds on to beat Juventus in penalty kicks at AT&T Park

Everton held on to defeat Juventus 2-1 after penalty kicks as part of the International Champions Cup in front of more than 20,000 fans at AT&T Park on Wednesday night.

The two teams played to a 1-1 draw in regulation, but Everton prevailed 6-5 in penalty kicks when goalie Tim Howard came up with a big stop on Frederico Pelus.

With the victory, Everton advances to meet the winner of tonight’s Real Madrid-Los Angeles Galaxy matchup on Saturday.

Everton struck first Wednesday when Kevin Mirallas found the back of the net in the 61st minute of what proved to be a very even matchup. Everton held a slight edge in shots on goal (16-14), but Juventus won the ball-control battle.

Juventus’ Kwadwo Asamoah was able to knot the match 1-1 when he scored in the 80th minute, which led to penalty kicks being needed to decide who would advance in the tournament.

The International Champions Cup pits eight elite teams from around the world in a tournament that will conclude with the championship in Miami on Aug. 7. The other teams competing in the event are AC Milan, Chelsea, Valencia C.F. and Inter Milan.
