Event caps weeklong celebration of fatherhood

Fatherhood Awareness Week runs from June 11-17 in San Mateo County. The event will culminate with "Dad and Me in the Park" on June 16 at Coyote Point Park for Father’s Day. The event, along with others throughout the year, is meant to nurture and encourage the relationship between fathers and their children.

Children who are apart from their biological fathers are five times more likely to live in poverty, be abused, commit crime, drop out of school or abuse alcohol or drugs, according to Supervisor Jerry Hill, who has been a longtime supporter of the local nonprofit Fatherhood Collaborative.

Workshop to address Costco remodel, gas plan

A controversial plan to renovate Redwood City’s Costco and add 16 gas pumps to the site heads to a public workshop at 6:30 tonight at the Fair Oaks Community Center, 2600 Middlefield Road. The site doesn’t sell gas now, and the plan to add the service has sparked residents’ concerns about additional traffic and air pollution. Costco also hopes to expand its existing 120,000-square-foot store to 160,000 square feet.

City planners will delve into the project’s potential environmental effects before the environmental review goes to the Planning Commission June 19.
