Eureka police investigate explosives at motel

Police in Eureka have evacuated a downtown block while they investigate a report that explosives were left in a motel room.

Eureka Police Department's interim chief Murl Harpham says a local bail bondsman called in the report on Monday. Harpham says the bail bondsman reported that a man who recently was booked into jail told him he left C-6 plastic explosives in his room at Christie's Motel.

Police tell the Times-Standard of Eureka (http://bit.ly/xgnN5q) that the man reported leaving the explosives on his night stand, with some wires protruding.

The suspect's name and additional details were not immediately released. Officers evacuated the 1400 block of Fourth Street and blocked off portions of O and N streets as a precaution.
