EPA regulation of emissions = profit for energy companies

The Senate yesterday defeated a proposal by Lisa Murkowski that would have blocked the EPA from regulating carbon dioxide (the stuff you breathe out) and other greenhouse gasses. The White House opposed the Murkowski amendment, and as is typical, painted the other side as shills for special interests — “big oil companies and their lobbyists” in this case.

But, as is almost always the case, there were big businesses on the administration’s side, too, standing to profit from EPA regulation. Back when the Supreme Court was ruling on EPA regulation of greenhouse gasses, Entergy filed an amicus brief endorsing EPA regulation.

So, it’s accurate for EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson to say Murkowski has the support of big oil companies and their lobbyists, but Jackson has the support of big power companies and their lawyers.
