Emergency landing for Qantas jumbo jet at SFO

A Qantas Airways jetliner carrying 212 passengers made an emergency landing at San Francisco International Airport early Tuesday after one of its four engines failed, authorities said.

Flight 74 departed SFO around 11:05 p.m. Monday for Sydney and was 45 minutes into its trip when it was forced to turn back, an airport duty manager said. The Boeing 747 landed successfully at SFO around 12:45 a.m. Tuesday, and there were no injuries, she said.

Passengers were staying in local hotels as the airline searched for ways to get them to their destination, officials said. The cause of the engine failure is under investigation.
