Elderly man dies in driveway accident

An elderly man was killed Saturday night after his wife ran him over in her vehicle while backing out of their Chinatown driveway, police said.

Leo Hung Pan, 82, was taken to San Francisco General Hospital on Saturday night, but did not survive his injuries.

His wife, whose name has not been released, was backing out of the couple’s driveway near Mason and Washington streets in Chinatown around 8:15 p.m. when she accidentally hit Hung Pan and dragged him behind the vehicle, police said.

A San Francisco police officer said the husband and wife were trying to switch parking spaces or vehicles when the incident happened.

The intersection of Washington and Mason streets is two blocks away from Chinatown’s bustling Stockton Street, where on Sunday thousands of people crowded the crosswalks and sidewalks, cars darted down the narrow one-way streets and cable cars navigated tracks along Washington Street. The intersection is also home to the busy San Francisco Cable Car Museum and a popular cafe.

The victim’s wife or other family members could not be reached for comment. She is not facing charges in the case, which has been referred to the San Francisco Police Department’s Hit and Run detail for further investigation, police said.
