Edwards wins first county straw poll

Presidential candidate John Edwards came away with a resounding victory on Sunday in the first-ever Democratic straw poll in San Mateo County, followed by fellow candidate and special guest Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio.

The straw poll, conducted by the San Mateo County Democratic Central Committee and designed to rally support among local Democrats and boost voter turnout in the 2008 presidential election, came with a few surprises that strayed slightly from national trends to date in the race to the Democratic nomination.

Edwards, a former U.S. senator, captured 29 percent of the vote with his 221 votes. Kucinich earned 23.6 percent with his 180 votes. Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., came in third with 22.5 percent and 171 votes, and current Democratic front-runner Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., came away with only 16.8 percent and 128 votes.
