Ed Lee may have MC Hammer, but Avalos gets his own viral video

Everyone knows by now that Ed Lee has secured the coveted MC Hammer endorsement in this year’s San Francisco mayoral race, but Supervisor John Avalos could have another ace up his sleeve – Enrique Inglesias.

A video posted to YouTube on Wednesday -- meant as an answer to the pro-Lee celebrity-laced “Too Legit to Quit” music video last month -- remixes video of the 1999 Inglesias hit, “Bailamos” but instead using “Avalos” for the chorus.

The video claims that the San Francisco mayoral race has proven to be a “high school popularity contest” and the description encourages viewers to “check out this political campaign video with smiling local celebrities and a perfectly quirky song from your formative years.”

The smiling local celebrities in the Avalos piece are only represented by photos, while Lee’s video features real ones –- including Giants closing pitcher Brian Wilson, Black Eyed Pea will.i.am and Hammer himself. The Avalos video feigns backing from Sharon Stone, Robin Williams, Puck from “The Real World” and Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum, who is subtitled as a “World Series champion/marijuana enthusiast.”

As of Thursday afternoon, the Lee video had drawn more than 340,000 views since being posted on Oct. 24.
