Ed Lee headed to DC for mayors conference with sports on his mind

Mayor Ed Lee is headed to Washington, D.C., on Tuesday for the U.S. Conference of Mayors, where he wants to talk about his favorite topic with other municipal leaders: job creation.

But with the 49ers in the midst of a Super Bowl run and a massive yacht race set to come to The City over the next two years, sports will likely be on his mind as well.

The mayor has said in recent press events that he wants to build excitement – and presumably a larger donor list -- for the America’s Cup yacht race set to come to San Francisco. The nonprofit arm of the America’s Cup needs to raise $32 million to cover The City’s costs for the race before the main event in the fall of 2013.

Lee also has a little bet to settle with New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, after the 49ers defeated the Saints in dramatic fashion on Saturday. According to the terms of a mayoral wager made last week, Landrieu owes Lee some Big Easy treats like local seafood, a king cake and Abita beer. Hopefully, Lee brought a big bag and isn’t questioned too heavily by airport security.

If Lee sees New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg in the Capital City, there could be more friendly wagering in store for Sunday’s NFC Championship against the Giants.
