Eatery burglarized, perpetrators leave death threat in note

Lisa’s Mexican Restaurant in Daly City, a favorite with many police officers and city staffers, received a death-threat note after it was burglarized recently.

Lisa’s owner, Jose Guillermo Pinzon, said he opened the restaurant at 6582 Mission St. on Tuesday to find a cash register broken into and several bottles of wine, beer and soda pilfered. On the floor, he said, lay a note handwritten in Spanish that said, "This is nothing. Next time we’ll kill you."

The burglars broke into the rear window of the restaurant sometime between Saturday night and Tuesday morning, while the restaurant was closed, according to police.

Capt. Mike Edwards said the suspects broke the cash register and took $250, as well as several bottles from the restaurant’s storage. They also drank a bottle of beer and a Red Bull, Edwards said, which will be processed for fingerprints by police.

Pinzon said the loss of cash, bottles and the closure of the restaurant Tuesday cost his business about $1,000 in losses. But it’s the threat note that concerns the restaurateur the most.

"It’s not enough to intimidate us, but it’s uncomfortable because you’re thinking of who it can be," said Pinzon, who bought the restaurant with his partner three years ago. "I’m concerned and more conscious about people who are coming into the restaurant. We’re going to pray and keep the focus on the work."

A year and a half ago, Pinzon was robbed by three men who held a knife to his throat outside of Lisa’s. According to police, there is no connection between the two incidents.

Vice Mayor Maggie Gomez, who often frequents Lisa’s Mexican Restaurant for dinner, said she was sorry to hear of the establishment’s troubles.

"I’m sorry to hear that somebody has such ill will toward them," she said. "I think that’s plain jealousy — Mario and Jose are wonderful, you can’t get better service. I’m sure our police department will solve that mystery as they do many others."
