East Palo Alto fire leaves nine homeless 

Nine East PaloAlto residents are homeless today after a fire completely destroyed their home, according to the Menlo Park Fire District.

The fire was reported at 2 p.m. Thursday at 2523 Illinois St. when neighbors called 911. Fire units quickly responded, finding the home consumed by flames.

A resident in the home discovered the fire when she emerged from a bedroom and was met with smoke coming from the kitchen and garage. The woman woke two children and an adult who were napping and got everyone out.

Thinking his family was still inside the home upon arriving from work, a male occupant was injured when he broke a window with his fist trying to get to his family.

It was determined that the fire started in the garage No other injuries were reported. The Red Cross was called to find housing for the residents.

Damage was estimated at $250,000. The fire remains under investigation.
