Duo leads O’Connell to shutout over Washington

They spoke afterwards about a supernatural connection, and the evidence actually seemed to support such an explanation.

Jocelyn Alonso optimistically said she is 5-foot-3. Korey Santillan stands an inch shorter. Yet somehow, the forwards on the O’Connell girls’ soccer team managed to win almost every key 50-50 ball and find one another with five or six Washington defenders surrounding them inTuesday’s San Francisco Section semifinal at Boxer Stadium.

The result? Three goals for Alonso and two for Santillan, a 5-0 win and a spot in Saturday’s final, where the Boilermakers will look for the first title in program history against the winner of today’s Balboa-Lowell match.

"We just kind of connect and can almost read each other’s mind," said Santillan, a sophomore.

Added freshman Alonso: "We both feel like we know the game. And we don’t care who gets the goals. We just play to win."

O’Connell (14-2) lost to Washington 2-1 in double overtime in last year’s semifinal and fell 3-1 on April 10 in the two teams’ only prior meeting this season. But Tuesday, the Boilermakers took control from the start, with Santillan scoring just 6 minutes into the game. Alonso added goals in the 20th and 37th minutes of the first half to give O’Connell a commanding lead and the Boilermakers’ defense held the Eagles (11-3-1) to just three shots on goal despite persistent pressure from Madeleine Armour.

Senior center midfielder Alejandra Caro added two assists for O’Connell, while Boilermakers goalkeeper Jhosselyn Alvarenga had three saves — including a lunging deflection to rob Armour midway through the first half.
