Driver released after crash that killed girl, 8

The man arrested for alleged drunken driving and causing a Redwood City crash that killed an 8-year-old girl has posted bail and been released; officials say it is yet to be determined what charges he may face.

Richard Tom, 45, of Redwood City, was driving a silver Mercedes-Benz on Monday night through the intersection of Santa Clara Avenue and Woodside Road when he allegedly broadsided a Nissan Maxima as it was making a turn, killing Sydney Ng, 8, and injuring Ng’s mother and her older sister, police say. The crash, which occurred at 8:18 p.m., totaled both cars.

Tom posted $50,000 bail Tuesday night, according to Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe. He is scheduled to appear in court March 28.

"Because he posted bail, his court date will be later and it will give everyone time to sort through things," Wagstaffe said.
