Driver of stolen car in fatal crash near Bay Bridge identified

A man who authorities said died this weekend in the fiery crash of a stolen car on the western Bay Bridge approach has been identified by the medical examiner as 27-year-old Eric Ballesteros.

Around 6 a.m. Saturday morning, Ballesteros purportedly lost control of the late-model Acura as he drove it from San Francisco on Interstate 80 at speeds nearing 100 mph, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The 1998 Acura Integra smashed into the concrete wall on the left side of the freeway, continuing sideways on the shoulder near the First Street on-ramp until it crashed into a large concrete bridge support pillar, the CHP said.

The driver, later identified as Ballesteros, was killed on impact, according to CHP. Medical personnel attempted to revive him but failed.

The car was reported stolen in San Francisco after the crash.
