Driver killed in alleged street race

An alleged street race between two vehicles turned fatal Tuesday night in Oakland when the driver of a yellow 2005 Nissan slammed into a Hyundai and died, police said today.

The Nissan was traveling westbound in the 7100 block of Doolittle Drive at "a high rate of speed" when the Nissan lost control, skidded to the left side of the roadway and collided with a gray 2007 Hyundai traveling eastbound at about 9:35 p.m., according to officials.

The driver of the Nissan, Oakland resident Lawrence Andrada, 42, was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said. The Hyundai’s driver, a 57-year-old man from Hayward, sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital, according to police.

The Nissan was reportedly racing an unidentified black vehicle prior to the collision, police said. The Hyundai was apparently not involved in the alleged street race, according to police. The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Oakland Police Department at (510) 777-8658.
