Drew stumbles against Crystal Springs

Wyatt Woodson and Ben Graham-Helwig combined for 25 points — 17 on free throws — as the Crystal Springs Uplands boys’ basketball defeated Drew 43-35 on Thursday.

The win knots the two Bay Counties League West teams in fourth place at 3-4.

"Sure, we talked about [the playoffs] before the game," CSU coach Ren Marquette said. "I told them it was time to make our stand."

Drew coach Jason Naumann was not around to see his team’s second-half rally. He was ejected midway through the second quarter after drawing back-to-back technicals.

Despite hitting only three field goals, the Gryphons took a 22-13 lead into halftime. They hit 16 of 20 free-throw attempts, led by Woodson’s 9-for-12. In contrast, the Dragons had no first-half free throws and only eight overall.

Crystal Springs Uplands won this game with hustling, swarming defense, continually double-teaming Drew guard Scott Schulkin. Schulkin, who entered scoring 25.8 points per game, had 20, but only six in the first half on 2-of-6 shooting.
