Dramatic kidnapping in copy shop turns out to be a hoax

An employee at a copy shop reported a terrifying incident to police Friday that ended up being an elaborate prank, Officer Albie Esparza said.

The employee told police that a man walked into the shop in the 700 block of Van Ness Avenue about 11:10 a.m. and was followed by another man, who appeared to be in his 20s. The second man grabbed the other man by the neck and dragged him out of the store, police said.

Outside the store, both men fell to the ground and the apparent victim yelled, “Don't let them take me.” A third man then appeared and helped the second man force the apparent victim into the back seat of a car, which then fled.

The car and its occupants were found later and investigators discovered that the three men knew each other.
