Doyle Drive work creates detours tonight

Late-night drivers are being asked to plan ahead for overnight closures of the northbound lanes connecting state Highway 1 to U.S. Highway 101 this evening, as work continues on the Doyle Drive replacement project.

The shutdown of the bridge just north of the tunnel on Highway 1 will last from 10 p.m. to 11 a.m. and will require long detours, Caltrans said.

If possible, drivers should avoid traveling northbound on Highway 1 during the closure. The primary detour directs drivers to turn right on Geary Boulevard from Park Presidio Boulevard, then left onto Van Ness Avenue, continuing on Highway 101 toward the Golden Gate Bridge.

Another option for northbound drivers is to take a right turn onto Lincoln Way before Golden Gate Park. After that, drivers are instructed to take a left onto Stanyan Street, a right onto Oak Street, a left onto Franklin Street and finally a right onto Lombard Street, before continuing onto Highway 101 toward the bridge.

The overnight closure will allow crews to shift northbound traffic on Highway 1 just north of the tunnel onto the southbound lanes so that work can begin on a permanent replacement bridge, the agency said.

Southbound traffic is currently running on a temporary bridge.
