Downtown San Francisco, SoMa gridlocked due to Obama event

The South of Market district became a commute nightmare Thursday due to President Barack Obama’s visit.

Street closures around the St. Regis Hotel at 125 Third St. turned surrounding roadways into parking lots. Several Muni lines had to be rerouted.

The president was set to deliver remarks at a Democratic National Committee event at the St. Regis Hotel. His motorcade was set to head out of The City around 10:30 a.m., police said.

There was at least one attraction for delayed commuters. Medical marijuana advocates chanted slogans near the hotel. They reportedly recruited homeless people to help them chant, according to a witness.
