Downed trees close stretch of Hwy. 84

A half-mile stretch of state Highway 84 has been closed Friday near Portola Valley in unincorporated San Mateo County after several large trees fell in the road, according to a sergeant with the sheriff's department.

Sheriff's Sgt. Jeff Kearnan said the highway has been closed between Portola Road and Tripp Road.

Caltrans crews are removing the trees, he said, and the road is expected to be closed until at least 1 p.m.

"This whole week we've had trees falling near houses, trees on the roads," Kearnan said. "That's just how it is out here when it rains."

Kearnan said the trees likely fell on the highway because of a combination of water saturation in the roots, clay in the soil and windy weather.

Traffic is being redirected off the highway and around the Caltrans crews, he said.

The detour is not expected to cause back-ups.
