Double-shooting takes slaying tally into double digits

Two men were gunned down early Sunday as they sat in a car outside a Vistacion Valley housing project, marking The City’s ninth and 10th homicides of the year.

Demarco Vaughn, 27, and James Gibson, 29, died of gunshot wounds around 1:40 a.m. moments before emergency crews arrived on scene, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office. Both victims lived in San Francisco.

Ingleside Police Station Lt. Frank Lee said it appeared that a single shooter fired seven or eight bullets through the driver-side window of the gray 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix that the two victims were sitting in. The car was parked in the Loehn Street cul-de-sac, halfway between Gleaneagles Golf Club and Vistacion Valley Playground in the Sunnydale neighborhood, an area that Lee said experiences a lot of crime and "drug activity."

Lee said an investigation is pending. He said he didn’t think the victims were related to each other, and he said he didn’t know if the shooting was gang-related.

No one else was believed to have been in the victims’ car at the time of the shooting, according to Lee. He said little was known about the double-homicide and he could not provide a description of the person who he said approached the victims and then shot them to death.

Supervisor Sophie Maxwell, who represents the neighborhood, said Sunday that extra probation officers could help The City tackle its high homicide count. She said 98 people fell victim to homicide in The City in 2007, including 65 people who had spent time in prison.

"We have an opportunity to touch these people — are we doing the best job?" Maxwell said. "We’re short probation officers. If it’s really a priority then we need to put the resources behind the agencies and the departments. We’ve done it with the police, now we need to look at probation."

In a separate incident around 2 a.m. Saturday, a man was taken to the hospital in critical condition after he was shot in the head at the corner of Felton Street and San Bruno Avenue. Police said an occupant of one vehicle fired at an occupant of a second vehicle.
