Don’t forget the bureaucrats’ job security

Byron’s excellent column yesterday suggests that the government find $40 billion in annual savings by slowing the growth of federal salaries until they become commensurate with private-sector pay.

He notes that on aggregate, the bureaucrats make much more in terms of salary and especially benefits than people in comparable private-sector jobs. But let me add something more: federal employees enjoy near-absolute job security — very much unlike all pay grades in the private sector — and government pay does not reflect this reality.
