Dolores Park could close for months

The grassy areas of Dolores Park could be closed for months at a time for its $11.7 million renovation.

In order to renovate trails and the irrigation system, contractors will need complete control of the open area, said Recreation and Park Planner Mary Hobson.

But since those are not the only pieces to the makeover puzzle – the lighting system, tennis courts, the clubhouse, the bathrooms, the field and landscape will also be redone – the closure could be for only a portion of the estimated 16-month project, Hobson said. However, it could also be for a major chunk of the time.

“It’s really too early to tell. We still have to set up community meetings. Of course we will do our best to open parts of the park and make it as available as possible,’’ Hobson said. “But for the safety of the park users we also try not to have people playing next to construction zones.’’

The tentative construction time frame starts December 2011 and ends April 2013.

The children’s play area, a separate $3 million renovation, will likely be closed for construction from October until April.
