Dodd Makes Retirement Official

Saying it is his "moment to step aside," Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., announced he will not seek a sixth term in November.

Dodd made the announcement in Connecticut, telling constituents he started thinking about retiring while visiting the Arlington Cemetery grave of the late Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., on Christmas Eve.

Political analysts say the move will benefit Democrats. Polls showed Dodd trailing two Republican opponents and polls show Democrat Richard Blumenthal would be able to retain the seat for his party.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said in a statement he understood "how truly difficult this decision was for him to step away," but some are wondering whether Dodd was pushed in order to save the seat.
