DNA backlog to be addressed at Police Commission

How bad is that backlog of DNA samples waiting to be tested at the San Francisco Police Department’s beleaguered crime lab? Check it out on Wednesday when the Police Commission hears a presentation from police Chief George Gascon.

Hundreds of cases have languished at the lab, with at least one man accused of murder allowed to remain free to commit rape even though his DNA sample was in police hands.

The DNA lab has since stopped prioritizing evidence it tests based on whether there’s a suspect in mind, according to Gascon. But eliminating the backlog will take about a year as the Department sends its testing to other labs.
